DESCRIPTION
When you step into Natlab, you can’t miss it: a 22-meter-long mural that brings more than a century of history and imagination to life. I created this wall visual to tell the story of the Philips Physics Laboratory (Natlab), from its earliest experiments to the creative space it has become today.
The mural connects moments of discovery, curiosity, and creative spark. You can find references to the Van der Pol equation, the Casimir effect, Queen Wilhelmina’s shortwave radio broadcast, the Oscar-winning DP70 projector, Albert Einstein’s visit, and the first electronic sounds by Kid Baltan. Each image marks a point where science, technology, art, and imagination came together, the same fertile ground that gave rise to Natlab itself.
A LIVING HISTORY
This work is not only a reflection on the past; it’s an invitation to look differently. Through augmented reality, the mural gains an extra dimension. Images, sounds, and archival fragments from Natlab’s history appear in the space, adding a sense of motion and time. The past becomes visible again in the present, just as Natlab has done for more than a hundred years.
Visitors can explore the interactive layers using the free Artivive app. By pointing your phone at the mural, hidden stories and connections come to life.
